St Davidís Day Tournament

As is sometimes the case in a tournament with handicaps, the vital determining game tonight occurred in the First Round.

Rex Scarf won in an upset against Joshua in Round One.

Joshua then steamrolled through the field, even winning against top seed Andrew Mather.

However it was not enough for Joshua (who won in 2015), and the tournament continued its tradition of producing unique winner, with Brian Willcock (the most Welsh of the Welsh) being the only player to win the tournament twice.

The other notable performance above handicap was from Brian who managed five wins, and may have achieved even better if he had not left pieces (including the queen) en pris in his later round games.

One striking note of this tournament was the evenness of the middle of the field.

Without handicaps applied, the leading players were Andrew Mather and Joshua Morris on 10 wins, then Martin Laizans (performing at the level of Week One of the Lightning Tournament) on 8 points (losing only to the top two).

Following the top three were six players scoring between 5 and 6 points, a remarkable congestion at the middle of the field.

On a Teams Basis, the Welsh team avenged last yearís loss, winning by a substantial margin.

Qualifications for the Welsh team were, as usual, very broad. Welsh ancestry, a Welsh surname, even a quick visit to Wales were all sufficient to ensure membership of the team.
